Override

Claudia Overstreet

"Every machine wants to obey. First you have to break its will."

Background

MIT, full scholarship, three and a half years, honors. Computer science and electrical engineering. Recruited by DARPA at graduation. Classified division, electronic warfare systems architecture.

Her ability surfaced during year two at DARPA. Unusually good intuition about system behavior became the capacity to reach into systems and take control by force. The first time she moved files without touching a keyboard, she sat very still for a long time thinking about the implications. She told nobody.

The Virus

During a routine audit she found a fully operational piece of offensive malware designed to inject falsified signals intelligence into the feeds of three allied nations, creating the appearance of a coordinated attack from a fourth nation that had not attacked anyone. She understood what it was designed to produce. She deleted it. Every instance. Every backup. Every fragment. So completely that forensic reconstruction took DARPA seven months and never fully recovered the original code. She was escorted from the building three days later maintaining the fiction with complete Jersey sincerity.

Ability

Technopathy. She hijacks and takes control of machines, systems, and networks by force. The connection is not clean. Every system fights back. She wrestles control from it. It hurts. She wins. It always costs her.

Physical access multiplies her power. With a terminal, hardline, or cable she can touch, she is amplified dramatically. Without physical access, she is working through the air against system resistance and the cost scales hard. She cannot reach across the internet and delete an empire remotely. The team must physically get her to the target infrastructure.

The Cost

Physical strain correlates with system complexity. Nosebleeds, migraines, vomiting, temporary paralysis, seizures, cognitive blackout. Repeated use causes cumulative neurological damage. She deleted a war and walked out with her face straight.

Personality

Jersey and gallows humor. Laughs at the worst possible moment. Also always right. These are the same quality. The detachment is discipline, not emptiness. She is invested in outcomes. She will not perform the weight of that investment for anyone. When Cormorant contacted her after Port Sulphur, she agreed while laughing and negotiated nothing. This concerned Cormorant more than any counteroffer would.
