Cormorant

Wren Ashby

"The water remembers what they tried to bury."

Background

Born to a four-generation fishing family in Houma, Louisiana. First Ashby to leave for college. Full scholarship to LSU, doctorate in environmental toxicology from Tulane. She returned to the Gulf Coast to fix the water she grew up in.

At 31, working as a federal research contractor, she was conducting general environmental toxicology research, developing detection systems for everyday pollutants. Her methods were getting sophisticated enough that she was about to stumble onto Victor Crale's illegal dumping operation as a byproduct. Crale saw her coming before she saw him. He destroyed her preemptively: findings buried, contract terminated, professional reputation destroyed through fabricated ethics violations. She never knew why.

Prolonged exposure to contaminated sites changed her biology. She spent years engineering what she knew into patents: chemical detection membranes, remediation processes, early warning networks. By her early 40s she was worth north of $800 million. The same industry that destroyed her pays her licensing fees quarterly. Ashby Environmental Holdings is the legitimate face. The Ghost Wardens are what the patents cannot reach.

Ability

Absorbs and metabolizes environmental toxins and pollutants. Converts them into pressurized bioluminescent compounds she can project, weaponize, or use to "read" contaminated environments. She glows faintly green-black in darkness. Her skin has the iridescent quality of an oil slick.

The Cost

When she absorbs too much, her body needs time to dispose of or integrate the toxins. During recovery, her immune system shuts down completely. She becomes highly susceptible to normal pathogens, viruses, and infections. Requires large doses of antibiotics on hand at all times. Needs physical protection from the team during recovery because she physically cannot fight anything. Every major absorption means the team loses their leader for days.

Personality

Leads because she cannot tolerate preventable failure. Reads situations and people the way she reads contamination. Feels everything at full volume and has never found a way to turn it down. Does not drink. Does not sleep enough. She is emotionally exploitable because she cares about outcomes more than she cares about protecting herself from them.
